Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo participated in the Foreign Affairs Council meeting

Evarist Bartolo has called for more concrete engagement by the EU in supporting the economic recovery of its southern neighbours, including Libya.

“Supporting the economic recovery of the region should not be underestimated,” Bartolo told a meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council.

The European Affairs Minister welcomed the recent communication by the European Commission on the bloc’s southern neighbourhood, which outlined an investment plan.

“The challenges are not small, but the EU needs to step up,” Bartolo said.

He also emphasised the importance of restoring stability to Africa’s Sahel region.

“Instability in this region has wider direct implications in the Mediterranean, primarily with regards to migratory flows and counterterrorism,” he said, adding the situation required further coordination within the EU and other multilateral fora.

The foreign ministers also held a virtual meeting with US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on renewing transatlantic relations and reinvigorating multilateralism.

In the margins of the Council meeting, Malta and Slovakia signed an agreement on the Mutual Protection of Classified Information.
